Aigle was laid down in October 1929 in Dunkirk and was commissioned in September 1932. This was due to the French doctrine of having their large destroyers act as scouting vessels capable of fighting small cruisers. ![]() French destroyers were much larger and faster than other destroyers of the time, nearly double the displacement of contemporary British designs. ![]() The Aigle was an improvement on the previous French Destroyers with greater speed, seakeeping, and firepower.
